We realize that UIC is a commuter campus in a large metropolitan city. Engaging students to be active participants in advancing a positive campus culture can, at times, be challenging. However, we also recognize that this is not definitive. We know that there is a viable student presence; that in conjunction with the realities of collegiate life, students are still very much involved in our programs, our events, and making a visible presence.
Peers to Allies has proven to be a very successful program. Based on survey data and qualitative answers we know that students respond positively to the call to be active bystanders and social change agents. We believe this is because this retreat creates an experience for students that further connects them to the missions and visions of this University and to collegiate life. This retreat allows for all participants to create a collective experience and gain meaningful skills.
